DOT Physicals Spotlight: Mental Health Awareness

By Cindy FaberOccupational Health Advisor

It is estimated that more than 60 million U.S. adults live with some form of mental illness. During Mental Health Awareness Month, it is important to recognize how mental health impacts not only our personal lives, but also workplace safety, performance, and overall well-being.

Commercial drivers, in particular, face unique challenges that can increase the risk of stress, anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Long hours on the road, time away from family and friends, demanding schedules, traffic conditions, weather, inconsistent sleep, limited exercise, and poor eating habits can all take a toll on both physical and mental health.

Mental health plays a critical role in an individual’s ability to cope with stress, make sound decisions, remain alert, and safely perform job responsibilities. Conditions affecting mood, thinking, behavior, or emotional stability can interfere with concentration, coordination, reaction time, and overall functional control – all of which are essential for safe driving and workplace performance.

High levels of stress and anxiety can also trigger repeated adrenaline surges, increasing heart rate and breathing, and potentially raising the risk of serious health concerns such as heart attack and stroke.

The good news is that support and treatment options are available. Many individuals benefit from:

  • Individual counseling or talk therapy
  • Group therapy and support programs
  • Healthy coping strategies and lifestyle changes

Prescription medications may also effectively manage mental health conditions when properly prescribed and monitored by a healthcare professional. However, some medications can cause side effects such as drowsiness, blurred vision, or slower reaction times, which may impact the ability to safely perform driving or job-related duties.

While there is no single solution, the first step toward better mental health is breaking the silence. Open conversations, support systems, and self-care strategies can make a meaningful difference.

Tips for Supporting Better Mental Health

  • Don’t hide that you are struggling — there is no shame in asking for help
  • Talk with family, friends, or a licensed mental health professional
  • Focus on what matters most and set realistic goals and priorities
  • Let go of regrets and practice self-compassion
  • Prioritize consistent, quality sleep
  • Exercise regularly – even a 15-minute walk can help reduce stress
  • Incorporate stress-relieving foods into your diet, including:
    • Warm oatmeal
    • Salmon and tuna
    • Green leafy vegetables
    • Pistachios and almonds
    • Oranges and bananas

Mental health matters to all of us. By taking intentional daily actions and supporting one another, we can create healthier individuals, safer workplaces, and stronger communities.
