WEBINAR: DOT PHYSICAL MANAGEMENT - Workforce QA

MAY 15, 2024 @2:30 CST

Presented by: Cindy Faber, Occupational Health Advisor | Grady Phillips, CRO

Managing DOT (Department of Transportation) physicals involves ensuring that commercial drivers meet the medical qualifications necessary to operate vehicles in accordance with DOT regulations.

Stay informed about any updates or changes to DOT regulations pertaining to physical examinations. Update your processes and procedures accordingly to ensure ongoing compliance.

This webinar will include a basic outline of managing DOT physicals, including:

  • DOT FMCSA Regulations vs. Guidelines: Familiarize yourself with the specific requirements outlined by the DOT for commercial drivers. These regulations cover various health conditions, vision standards, hearing standards, and more.
  • Scheduling Physical Examinations: Coordinate with certified medical examiners to schedule DOT physicals for your drivers. Ensure that the examiners are listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
  • Medical History Review: Ensure that drivers accurately complete their medical history forms. Review these forms to identify any potential health issues that could affect their eligibility for a DOT medical certificate.
  • Physical Examination: Ensure that the certified medical examiner conducts a thorough assessment according to DOT standards.
  • Documentation and Certification: Collect the necessary documentation from the medical examiner once the examination is complete. Ensure that drivers receive their DOT medical certificates promptly if they meet the required standards.
  • Records Management: Maintain accurate records of all DOT physical exams and medical certificates. This includes documenting exam results, expiration dates, and any follow-up actions taken.
  • The NEW Medical Examiner Handbook: An overview of the MEH structure, highlights removed and added information from previously published versions, and updates to the Medical Advisory Criteria published in Appendix A to 49 CFR part 391 (89 FR 3577, January 19, 2024).

By effectively managing DOT physicals, you can help ensure the safety of commercial drivers and the general public while also maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.
